Jumat, 29 Agustus 2014 | 05:07 WIB

Skalanews - The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has expressed the hope that the next government will form a national commission for the settlement of agrarian disputes in the country.

"The objective of forming a national commission for the settlement of agrarian disputes is to solve a wide range of agrarian disputes," coordinator of Kontras working board, Haris Azhar, said in a press statement released, Thursday.

The creation of the national commission would also help release environmental and agrarian activists who were being sentenced because of their advocacy work, he said.

The commission might also issue recommendations to the next government on the distribution of land for the benefit of people's welfare and justice as well as environmental conservation, he said.

"The commission can also evaluate the implementation of the Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of the Indonesian Economy (MP3EI)," he added.

Meanwhile, public policy observer, Arie Sujito, of the Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM), said the new government under the leadership of President-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo would have a greater chance to make the dream of agrarian reform come true.

"The substance of the agrarian reform has already been incorporated in Jokowi's nine priority programs. So I am optimistic it (agrarian reform) will be realized," he said. (ant/mar)
